Within sight of the Pennybacker Bridge over Lake Austin, Davenport Ranch mixes suburban living with wildscape panoramas. There are views of tree-packed hills on all sides, bare limestone cliffs over the lake and rough road cuts along Loop 360.
Then there are the street lights, the beautiful, private Austin Country Club that hugs the south shore of the lake and a collection of small shops in Davenport Village where you can bank or visit the local extension of Northwest Pharmacy. The steep Hill Country terrain also supplies long views and a brisk workout for walkers or joggers.
Although there are no parks in the neighborhood, outdoor opportunities do exist close by. There is a three-mile hiking trail available in the nearby Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve. And there is a public boat ramp underneath the 360 bridge. On those rare foggy fall mornings that later morph into bright sunshine, the lake can levitate a thick ribbon of white mist that rises up and follows its contours – simply amazing.
All of Davenport Ranch falls within the Eanes Independent School District. A private school, St. Stephen’s Episcopal School, sits on the west side of Loop 360.
By the numbers: a long, thin rectangle of 591 acres; annexed by Austin in 1997; as of late 2011; 9 transmission towers (5 are television) with the tallest, at 1,308 feet, belonging to KXAN-TV.
History: In 1947, Osceola Heard Davenport bought 1280 acres that included Davenport Ranch for $40,000. The wife of a Rio Grande Valley oilman later complained the deal cost her “one month’s income.” She contributed 60 acres of her land to help establish the 227 acre Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve. The Pennybacker Bridge was completed in 1982. The rust-coated steel frame was designed to blend with the wild look of the limestone cliffs. You might also note that no part of the bridge touches the water.
